A transverse bed runs across the full width of the motorhome at the rear, usually above a large garage. It packs a proper fixed double into a shorter vehicle, which makes it one of the most space efficient layouts you can buy.
Camper UK is a family run, award winning motorhome dealership, home to one of the largest indoor motorhome showrooms in the UK at 32,000 sq ft. You will find transverse bed layouts throughout our new and used stock from Bürstner, Carthago, Laika, Carado and Malibu. Every motorhome we sell is inspected, serviced and warranted by our 27 bay NCC approved service centre before it goes on sale.

A transverse bed, sometimes called a cross bed, is a fixed double that runs sideways across the full width of the rear of the motorhome. Because it uses the body's width rather than its length, a transverse bed motorhome can be noticeably shorter than an equivalent island bed model while still carrying a full size double.
The bed is usually raised above a large garage, with steps up and access from one side. That garage is a defining feature of the layout: there is typically space for electric bikes, camping furniture and a full load of holiday kit beneath the bed.
A full size fixed double without the body length an island bed demands.
The raised bed creates one of the biggest storage spaces in motorhoming, right below you.
The length you save goes into a bigger lounge and kitchen, or simply a shorter, easier vehicle.
Less length and less overhang mean more pitches, more parking spaces and simpler manoeuvres.
Transverse beds appear right across our coach built and van conversion stock. At Camper UK you can compare transverse bed motorhomes side by side across five of Europe's most respected brands, all under one roof. Finance from FCA regulated lenders and part exchange on any motorhome, campervan or caravan are both handled in house.
A transverse bed is a fixed double that runs sideways across the full width of the rear of the motorhome, usually raised above a large garage. It is sometimes called a cross bed.
Most are around 190cm long and between 135cm and 150cm wide, depending on the model. Because the bed spans the body width, taller sleepers should always stretch out on one before buying, which is easy to do in our showroom.
Access is usually from one side or corner, so the inside sleeper climbs past their partner. Many couples simply give the inside spot to the sounder sleeper. If you both get up in the night, fixed singles may suit you better.
The height creates the garage below, which is one of the layout's biggest selling points. There is usually room for electric bikes, a scooter or a full set of outdoor kit, with steps up to the bed.
Length. A transverse bed gives you a proper fixed double in a noticeably shorter vehicle, which means easier driving, easier parking and access to more pitches at lower cost.
The best way to judge a transverse bed motorhome is to climb in and stretch out. Our showroom is open seven days a week with transverse bed motorhomes ready to view. Call us on 01522 411252, or browse the current transverse bed motorhomes for sale listed below.
