What is a fixed island bed?
An island bed is a fixed double positioned away from the walls of the rear bedroom, so each person has their own side. There is no climbing over a partner at night and no rebuilding seats at bedtime. Most island bed motorhomes place the bed between the washroom and a separate shower cubicle, creating a true en suite feel, and the bed base usually lifts to reveal generous storage.
Island beds feature in larger coach built and A Class motorhomes, where the extra body length allows a dedicated bedroom. Many beds also adjust in height, letting you trade storage below for easier access, and on premium models the adjustment is electric.

What is the difference between an island bed and a French bed?
A French bed is tucked into a corner with one side against the wall, so it is accessed from one side only. An island bed stands clear of the walls with walk around access on both sides, which most owners find far more comfortable day to day.
Do island bed motorhomes need to be longer?
Generally yes. A dedicated rear bedroom with walk around access needs body length, so most island bed motorhomes are around seven metres or more. The reward is a genuine bedroom, and most owners find the extra length barely noticeable on the road.
How big is the mattress in an island bed?
Sizes vary by model, but most island beds are around 190cm long and 150cm wide, close to a standard UK double. Premium models use proper sprung or cold foam mattresses rather than cushions.
Is there storage under an island bed?
Yes. The bed base usually lifts on gas struts to reveal a large storage area, and on many models this connects through to an external garage or locker.
Can the height of an island bed be adjusted?
