What is a drop down bed?
A drop down bed is a double bed that sits flat against the ceiling while you travel and during the day, then lowers over the cab seats or front lounge at bedtime. Most are electrically operated at the touch of a button, while some use a simple manual pull down mechanism. Because the bed disappears when not in use, the floorplan below stays free for a larger lounge, a bigger kitchen or extra storage.
In many motorhomes the drop down bed works alongside a fixed bed at the rear, turning a comfortable couples tourer into a genuine four berth without adding anything to the length of the vehicle. In A Class motorhomes from Carthago, Laika and Bürstner, a drop down bed above the cab is often fitted as standard, giving you a permanently made up second double that vanishes overhead.

Are drop down beds comfortable to sleep on?
Yes. A drop down bed takes a full size mattress on a slatted or sprung base, so comfort is comparable to a fixed bed. Many owners leave the bedding made up so the bed is ready as soon as it is lowered.
How much weight can a drop down bed take?
Most drop down beds are rated for two adults, typically around 200kg, though the limit varies by model. We will confirm the exact rating for any motorhome you are considering, and demonstrate the mechanism during your handover.
Are drop down beds safe for children?

Do I lose headroom or living space below the bed?
Very little. When stowed, the bed sits close to the ceiling above the cab or lounge. On many models you can also set the lowered height, so one person can sleep while the space beneath remains usable.
